Optimizing Implementation of Long-Acting ART and Implementation Research (LATIR) in the ACTG through Qualitative Research with A5359 Trial Participants and Study Staff

Treatment Category

HIV Treatment, Implementation Science

Study Description

This study focuses on understanding factors that impact the lives of people living with HIV (PLWH) who have had challenges with taking oral medications, as well as what strategies have been helpful or unhelpful in making Long-Acting Antiretroviral Therapy (LA ART) injectables a successful treatment for them. What is learned in this study may affect future studies on how LA ART injectables can be implemented in real-life health care settings.

Study Purpose

To understand the specific challenges and strategies that exist to make LA ART injectable treatment and treatment delivery programs successful for PLWH who have had a hard time with oral pills. A5359 studies participants who had difficulty consistently taking oral medication (adherence), or staying engaged in healthcare (retention). This study will use group discussions with A5359 staff and one-on-one interviews with A5359 participants to gather information that may influence the success of future LA ART injectable delivery programs for individuals with adherence and retention challenges on oral HIB regimens. This information may also influence future implementation studies that focus on understanding and overcoming barriers to delivering treatment and incorporating that into real-life healthcare.

Target Participant

  • Current or former A5359 study participant or A5359 trial staff person
  • 18 years old or older
